Unless you have been on another planet for the last weeks, you certainly heard about the long awaited launch of cuil.com THE new search engine. Cuil (read “cool”) has been developed by a team of ex googlers and aims at nothing less than becoming the number one search engine!
As every single blogger and writer on the net has already tested cuil.com I thought I would give it a try and tell you what I think of it.
The interface:
The first thing you will notice in cuil, is that it has a slightly less sober interface than google. But as you know, it is a matter of taste so you get to decide what suits you best.
The relevancy:
As far as I can tell, the relevancy has not always been great, but it certainly isn’t as awful as some tests have concluded though I have been shocked to see a page under construction showing up as number 1 result! Of course, the pictures are often irrelevant but nothing disastrous in my opinion as they are quite enjoyable. The good part in this lack of relevancy (probably due to the youth of the engine) is that unknown websites will start getting some interest.
The speed:
Cuil.com is fast enough to compete with google at least on that aspect. This would have been a good point if it hadn’t been achieved at the cost of less accurate results.
I have also read that because cuil returned less results for a query than does google, ment they had a smaller index, this is completely false as this could be the result of a better filtering of returned pages.
To put it in a nutshell, cuil is certainly a refreshing alternative in a world dominated by google. It is certainly an achievement on the technical part of it as it has performed quite well indexing a massive amount of pages in few months. However, it still lacks the most important: the ability to deliver interesting results and will wait until we advise you to add it to your toolbox.
Oh, I almost forgot, if you need to learn more about cuil, use Google!
